Professional development
Authored by Dan Huie
What do professional development and pest control have in common? There was a day when I couldn't have told you. I just didn't get it. I thought the "bug guy" just hopped in his truck, drove to someone's home or business, jumped out the truck and went to work. And while that may have worked in the past, that certainly is not the pest management company modern consumers are looking for. Yes, our clients want simplicity, but they also want the peace of mind that comes with knowing they are investing in a company that is ready for the challenge and knows how to serve them well.
Several years ago my business partner, Sean Bergmann, and I became aware of the hazards of being an isolated company. We began seeking relationships with highly respected pest control companies around the nation (ABC in Austin, TX, Allgood Pest Solutions in Atlanta, GA and Buffalo Exterminating of Buffalo, NY). We became involved with the Washington State Pest Management Association and the National Pest Management Association. Through these relationships our awareness of best practices, materials, strategies and customer relations grew. We were inspired and became a company changing rapidly for the better.
Wanting to give back to those who helped us so generously, Sean has delved in offering his time, gifts, and experience. In the Fall of 2007, Sean was elected to the board of the WSPMA and in 2008 Sean was added to the NPMA's Leadership Development Group. Both positions have given Sean the opportunity to synergize other pest control companies; both on the managerial and ownership level, helping them to see their role in the larger field of the pest control industry.
The fact that the support of other pest control companies and organizations has chastened and promoted our own professionalism is indisputable. Our continued growth through hard times almost entirely due to referral is a testament to the benefit of being connected to others within the industry. A benefit of professional development enjoyed directly by our customers.
When it comes to selecting a pest management company, don't go it alone. Make certain the company you choose is well connected and well developed. The benefits to you are well worth it.
